The 2019/20 season was one of the most memorable seasons of football as things got out of control because of the pandemic, but still, all the games took place with the same enthusiasm. The Premier League Champions, Liverpool FC, had a great year, and Arsenal also managed to win the FA Cup this season. It was time for the showdown as the Premier League Champions and the FA Cup Champions had to come face to face to win the Community Shield. The Community Shield is awarded to the winning team every year, and it was the same this year. Liverpool FC won the Premier League with 99 points, 18 points ahead of the runners-up Manchester City. Arsenal did an outstanding performance in winning the 2020 FA Cup by defeating Manchester City in the semi-finals and thrashing Chelsea FC in the finals.
Both teams were in a great form, and it was time to see who brings the Community Shield home. Before the kick-off, every player and staff member kneeled on one knee to show their support for the Black Lives Matter movement. Liverpool started the match by kicking off. Arsenal looked like they wanted to keep possession of the ball rather than attacking and attempting for goals. Liverpool, on the other hand, started playing aggressively, trying to put pressure on Arsenal players. In the 6th minute itself, the Liverpool center back Virgil Van Dijk scored a goal. The ball was played inside the box by Robertson. But, the plan was not counted as Van Dijk was already in an offside position.
Liverpool was still playing aggressively. They even had some attempts before a beautiful goal by Aubameyang. He scored a banger from outside the box that ended up in the bottom right corner of the net. Aubameyang celebrated by making the ‘Wakanda Forever’ gesture to tribute the late Chadwick Boseman, who passed away on the 28th August 2020. The game continued, and the score was 1-0 at half-time. There was a lot of pressure on Liverpool. They did have the possession of the ball and even more attempts but were not able to convert their chances. Finally, in the 73rd minute, Takumi Minamino scored the equalizer for Liverpool. He was surrounded by the Arsenal defenders but still managed to put the ball into the net.
The score at full time was 1-1. The game went directly to penalties without any goal in the extra-time. Each team had 5 chances to convert their penalties. Arsenal scored all of them easily. On the other hand, a dreadful miss from Rhian Brewster of Liverpool, who was substituted in the 92nd minute of the game, cost them the 2020 Community Shield. Rhian Brewster hit the crossbar, and the ball ended up flying in the sky. Like that, Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal won the Community Shield without Mesut Ozil and Matteo Guendouzi. This has undoubtedly given a lot of confidence to Arsenal for the next season as they will look to win more and more trophies.
