5. EDWARD SCISSORHANDS (1990)

For his portrayal as Edward, an invention of The Inventor (Vincent Price), who gave the robotic young man scissors in place of hands, Depp won his first Golden Globe nomination. Even though the unusual young man is unsure of his surroundings—the house of a suburban family with a lovely daughter (Winona Ryder) with whom Edward falls in love—Depp offers Edward a surprising ability for empathy in the first of a career-long series of films with director Tim Burton. None of the several movies that Depp and Burton produced in their subsequent years were as charming as Edward Scissorhands.

4. FINDING NEVERLAND (2004)

A film on J.M. Barrie and how he came to compose the popular children’s favorite may have startled viewers who walked into “Finding Neverland” anticipating another remake of the original “Peter Pan.” Depp, who has a well-deserved reputation for giving powerful performances, is uncommonly reserved in his depiction of Barrie. Many critics have remarked on how accurately the actor captured Barrie’s tone. The business acknowledged this by nominating Depp for Best Actor at the Oscars, Golden Globes, and Screen Actors Guild awards.

3. WHAT’S EATING GILBERT GRAPE (1993)

A straight drama based in a tiny Iowa hamlet where Depp looks for his very obese mother Bonnie (Darlene Case) and his mentally challenged younger brother Arnie, “What’s Eating Gilbert Grape” was undoubtedly a change of pace for the actor (Leonardo DiCaprio). Johnny Depp’s performance is the dynamic heart and soul of “Gilbert Grape.” The connection between Depp and Leonardo DiCaprio, in particular, is exceptionally compelling, convincing the spectator that Gilbert and Arnie are indeed brothers.

When Depp decided to base his pirate Jack Sparrow on the unconventional music legend, Keith Richards of the Rolling Stones, he struck gold. When they saw the daily footage, several Disney execs were allegedly appalled by Depp’s daring approach and wanted to halt production since they believed it would fail. It wasn’t a failure, and Depp’s now-famous pirate serves as the focal point of a five-film series. Depp received nominations for the Oscar and the Golden Globe for his performance in the first “Pirates” movie, “The Curse of the Black Pearl,” and for Pirates 2, 2006’s “Dead Man’s Chest,” Depp received his seventh Golden Globe nomination.

In this real story of young FBI agent Joseph Pistone (Depp), who poses as “The Jewel Man,” Donnie Brasco, Depp made a drastic shift of image after a string of eccentric movies. Donnie quickly finds himself closely associated with the Bonanno crime family and serving as Lefty Ruggiero’s apprentice (Al Pacino). “Donnie Brasco” accomplished a lot for Johnny Depp’s burgeoning career. It not only showed that Depp could perform in a comedy. But it also addressed whether he could compete with big-name actors like Al Pacino.
