Five individuals lost their lives and at least 35 were injured when powerful tornadoes swept through Iowa. One tornado caused extensive damage in Greenfield, a small city, according to officials on Wednesday.
The Iowa Department of Public Safety reported that four people died in the Greenfield area due to Tuesday’s tornadoes. Another person, identified as Monica Zamarron, 46, died when her car was blown off the road by a tornado about 25 miles away. Authorities have not released the names of the victims from Greenfield as they are still notifying their families.
Officials from the Iowa Department of Public Safety indicated on Wednesday that the number of injuries is expected to be higher.
The tornado in Greenfield left a wide path of destruction, demolishing homes, breaking trees into splinters, and crushing cars in the town of 2,000 residents, located approximately 55 miles southwest of Des Moines. The tornado also damaged large wind turbines used for power production several miles outside the city.
Kimberly Ergish, 33, a resident of Greenfield, and her husband spent Wednesday sifting through the wreckage of their home, hoping to salvage family photos and other belongings. She acknowledged that there was little left that could be saved.
