Long-serving U.S. Representative Sheila Jackson Lee has revealed she has pancreatic cancer and is currently undergoing treatment.
The 74-year-old Texas Democrat, who is running for reelection to her 16th term, shared in a statement on Sunday that despite her diagnosis, she remains committed to her role as a leader advocating for justice and equality. Jackson Lee expressed her determination to face this personal challenge with faith and courage.
“I trust my doctors have crafted the best plan to target my specific illness,” Jackson Lee stated. “The road ahead will be tough, but I believe God will give me strength.”
Acknowledging potential absences from Congress during her treatment, Jackson Lee assured her constituents that her office will continue to serve them. She emphasized her commitment to collaborate with congressional leaders to participate in crucial votes.
Jackson Lee has served in Congress since 1995 and recently secured the Democratic nomination in March, following an unsuccessful mayoral campaign in Houston, where she aimed to become the city’s first Black female mayor. Her district encompasses downtown Houston and several historically Black neighborhoods in the city.
