TikTok announced on Tuesday that it has taken action to halt a cyberattack aimed at several prominent accounts, including one belonging to CNN.
“Our security team recently discovered malicious actors targeting CNN’s TikTok account,” stated TikTok spokesperson Jason Grosse in a prepared statement. TikTok has been collaborating with CNN to restore access to the account and has implemented additional security measures to protect it, Grosse mentioned.
“We are committed to preserving the platform’s integrity and will continue to monitor for any further suspicious activity,” Grosse emphasized. CNN did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
The social media platform revealed that the attack occurred through its direct messaging feature but did not provide specifics about how the hack was executed.
Grosse mentioned that TikTok is currently investigating the incident to identify any vulnerabilities and is assisting affected account owners in restoring their access.
While Grosse did not disclose the exact number of targeted accounts, he noted that only “a very small number of accounts” were compromised.
TikTok did not name the other affected accounts, although it acknowledged that the TikTok account of socialite and reality TV star Paris Hilton was targeted but remained secure.
