Sir Ian McKellen, the 85-year-old veteran screen and stage actor, has recounted the harrowing experience of a fall he suffered during a performance of “Player King” at the Noel Coward Theatre in the West End. McKellen was playing the role of John Falstaff, a part prepared for with a fat suit, which he credits with saving his ribs and other joints from further injury.

The accident occurred during a fight scene in June, when McKellen lost his footing and fell onto the lap of someone in the front row. He was left with wrist and neck injuries, including chipped vertebrae and a fractured wrist, which have not fully healed. The injury has also left him with agonizing pains in his shoulders, making it difficult for him to move around without fear of further injury.

Despite his best efforts, McKellen was unable to return to the production, with his understudy, David Semark, taking over the role for the remainder of the West End run and the national tour. The experience has left McKellen feeling guilty and ashamed for causing the production to be temporarily halted.

In an interview with Saga magazine, McKellen described the accident as “horrible” and revealed that he has since relived the fall numerous times. He expressed his gratitude for the fat suit, which he believes helped to cushion the impact of his fall and prevent more serious injuries.

Although McKellen has been unable to continue with the production, he remains hopeful that the play will be revived in the future. In the meantime, he is being looked after by his neighbors and is finding solace in the support of his friends and fans. Despite the setbacks, McKellen remains proud of his work as a actor and is determined to continue performing, reassuring himself that he is not too old to act.

McKellen’s account of his fall serves as a reminder of the risks and challenges that come with performing on stage, and the importance of prioritizing safety and self-care. As one of the most respected and beloved actors of his generation, McKellen’s determination to continue acting despite his injuries is an inspiration to audiences everywhere.
