The New York Yankees have announced that right-handed starting pitcher Luis Gil has been placed on the 15-day injured list due to a lower back strain. In response, the team has recalled right-handed starter Will Warren from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.
Gil exited his start against the Cleveland Guardians on Tuesday during the fourth inning. According to Larry Fleisher of the Associated Press, Gil sought the assistance of an athletic trainer after delivering an 89 mph changeup to Jose Ramírez.
Following a brief discussion on the mound with New York manager Aaron Boone, Gil was replaced by Tim Hill. Before leaving the game, Gil allowed a home run to Brayan Rocchio and issued a four-pitch walk to Steven Kwan.
Postgame, Gil shared with reporters through a translator that he felt discomfort beginning in the third inning. “I never felt anything like that. You’re a little worried because you’re coming out of the game because you’re feeling something that’s not right.
But at the same time, we’ve just got to take it day by day and see how I feel tomorrow,” he said.
The 26-year-old Gil has a record of 12-6 with a 3.39 ERA and a 1.20 WHIP over 25 starts, totaling 124.2 innings. He has recorded 144 strikeouts and 66 walks.
Warren, who previously made his debut on July 30 when Gerrit Cole was scratched due to body fatigue, is set to return to the rotation. In that debut against the Philadelphia Phillies, Warren struck out six over 5.1 innings and allowed four earned runs in a 7-6 victory after 12 innings.
Warren’s second start, on August 7 against the Los Angeles Angels, was less successful. He allowed eight earned runs and eight hits, walked three, and lasted 4.1 innings in an 8-2 loss.
However, Warren concluded his first stint in the majors with a strong performance, giving up two earned runs and seven hits while striking out five over five innings in a 10-2 win over the Chicago White Sox.
While the White Sox are having a tough season with a 30-97 record, Warren aims to use this positive outing to build momentum. His next scheduled start is on Sunday at home against the Colorado Rockies.
