Residents have reported a scene of utter devastation, with many returning to find their homes and apartments destroyed, leaving nothing but rubble and chaos in their wake. Neveen Kheder, a resident, summed up the devastation in stark terms: “there is nothing, no apartment, no furniture, no homes, only destruction.”
The conflict has forced the vast majority of Gaza’s 2.3 million residents to flee their homes, with many seeking shelter in newly established “humanitarian zones”. The Health Ministry in Gaza has reported a staggering 69 dead and 212 wounded in the past 24 hours alone, bringing the total death toll to over 40,000 Palestinians. As the fighting continues, experts are urging a ceasefire to prevent a wider regional war.
In neighboring Egypt, high-level ceasefire talks are underway between Israeli and Hamas officials, with mediators from the US, Egypt, and Qatar attempting to broker a deal. However, significant differences remain, particularly over Israel’s insistence on maintaining forces in key corridors in Gaza. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has been adamant that Israel must retain control of these corridors to prevent smuggling and catch militants, while Hamas is holding out for a full withdrawal of Israeli forces from Gaza.

The US has proposed a plan to close the gaps between Israel and Hamas, but it remains unclear whether a deal can be reached.
