A devastating tragedy struck on Thursday morning as a boat carrying migrants capsized in the treacherous Drina River, resulting in the loss of at least 10 lives, including a nine-month-old baby and its mother. The boat was attempting to cross from Serbia to Bosnia, part of a long and treacherous journey that many migrants undertake to escape war, poverty, and persecution in their home countries. The Serbian Interior Minister, Ivica Dacic, reported receiving a call from a citizen around 5am, informing them of the accident. Initial reports stated that 18 migrants, including three children, had managed to make it to Bosnian shores, but later revised down to 10, suggesting that there may have been more migrants on the boat when it capsized.

The local authorities were able to retrieve the lifeless body of the baby, along with its mother, whose body was recovered earlier in the day. The tragic fate of the baby is a stark reminder of the devastating consequences that many migrants face while attempting to flee their homes in search of a better life. Of the 18 migrants who survived the disaster, 16 are from Syria and two are from Egypt, highlighting the vulnerability of many migrants, especially children, who are at risk of exploitation and abuse during their perilous journey. Ten of the survivors are minors, emphasizing the gravity of the situation.

The exact number of people in the boat remains unclear, with estimates ranging from 18 to 30. This incident is just the latest in a series of tragic events that have befallen migrants attempting to navigate the treacherous Balkan land route, where they often turn to people smugglers to take them across borders without authorization. Thousands of people are put at risk of drowning, exploitation, and violence as they seek to reach wealthy European countries.

Boris Trninic, the Bosnian emergency official, confirmed that 15 of the people in the boat reached safety, while the exact number of those who perished remains uncertain. The authorities are now working to identify the bodies and provide support to the surviving migrants. The tragic incident serves as a stark reminder of the complexities and challenges faced by migrants, who are often forced to make life-or-death decisions to escape the turmoil and uncertainty that plagues their homelands.

As the world grapples with the migrant crisis, it is essential that international cooperation and humanitarian efforts are scaled up to protect the lives and dignity of these vulnerable individuals. The drowning of the nine-month-old baby in the Drina River is a poignant reminder of the devastating consequences of inaction and the urgency to address this humanitarian crisis.
