Top officials from the United Nations delivered a serious message to the Security Council about the critical situation affecting around 800,000 people in a city in Sudan as violence intensifies.

Rosemary DiCarlo, who heads the UN’s political affairs, stressed that clashes between the Sudanese army and paramilitary groups near El Fasher, the capital of North Darfur, could lead to widespread conflict between different communities. This echoes concerns previously raised by Secretary-General Antonio Guterres.

The conflict, which started a year ago, has caused the largest displacement crisis globally, with millions urgently needing aid and millions more forced out of their homes.

Edem Wosornu, the UN’s aid operations director, highlighted the immediate danger facing civilians in El Fasher and warned of the potential for more violence in other parts of Darfur, where humanitarian needs are already critical.

Given these severe conditions, experts on global food security emphasize the urgent need for action to prevent widespread death and a severe hunger crisis in Sudan.

International donors have pledged over $2 billion at a recent conference in Paris, showing their commitment to easing suffering in regions affected by war.

The situation in Sudan remains unstable, with a significant risk of violence affecting vulnerable populations.

The UN’s urgent appeal for action underscores the seriousness of the crisis and the necessity for prompt and determined international support to prevent further disaster.
