The quarterback situation for the Minnesota Vikings continues to evolve heading into their upcoming game against the Green Bay Packers.

Coach Kevin O’Connell confirmed on Thursday that rookie Jaren Hall will start Sunday night, marking the team’s fourth change in starters since Kirk Cousins suffered a season-ending right Achilles tendon injury in Week 8.

Hall takes over from Nick Mullens, who went winless in two starts, throwing for 714 yards, four touchdowns, and six interceptions.

These losses have pushed the Vikings to the brink of the NFC playoff race, where they currently hold a 19.8% chance of clinching a postseason spot. Minnesota ranks second in the NFL with 30 turnovers this season.

“We need to secure possession of the football,” O’Connell emphasized. “Turnover margin has been a focal point all season, and I believe giving Jaren a full week of preparation with a clear game plan is the best approach at this time.

“I’m eager to see what Jaren can accomplish.”

Hall, a fifth-round pick in the 2023 draft, served as Cousins’ backup until his own injury earlier this season. He made one start against the Atlanta Falcons in Week 9 but left the game after sustaining a concussion in the first quarter.

Following Hall’s injury, Joshua Dobbs, acquired from the Arizona Cardinals, started the next four games before Mullens, originally the team’s second-string quarterback, took over after recovering from a back injury suffered in October.

The Vikings coaching staff was impressed with Hall’s performance against the Falcons, where he completed 5 of 6 passes for 78 yards and added 11 rushing yards on two scrambles.

Reflecting on the concussion he suffered, Hall acknowledged the physical challenges of the NFL and emphasized the need for smart play.

“There are a lot of big, fast players out there,” Hall noted. “You have to play within the system and make smart decisions to avoid unnecessary risks. It’s something I’ve learned from and will continue to improve on.”

Wide receiver Justin Jefferson expressed confidence in Hall’s growth since his debut start earlier this season.

“He’s been learning and progressing well as a rookie,” Jefferson said. “Despite the challenges this year with injuries, I believe Jaren has the ability to ignite our offense if given the opportunity. We trust him.”

O’Connell confirmed Mullens will serve as the backup quarterback on Sunday night. In addition to his interceptions and fumbles, Mullens had another interception nullified by a penalty and survived a dropped interception.

The Vikings will face the Packers in a critical matchup as they seek to keep their playoff hopes alive.
