Sean McVay has informed the Rams that he will continue as the head coach in Los Angeles, the team confirmed on Friday.
His decision follows his recent statement during the end-of-season news conference that he would take the necessary time to deliberate on his future and determine the best path forward to enhance his coaching prowess.
The Rams endured a challenging 5-12 season, marking McVay’s most difficult since joining Los Angeles in 2017. The team grappled with numerous injuries, affecting key players such as starting quarterback Matthew Stafford, wide receiver Cooper Kupp, and defensive tackle Aaron Donald.
McVay had signed a contract extension through the 2026 season during the 2022 offseason, aligning his tenure with that of general manager Les Snead.
Speculation about McVay’s potential retirement arose previously, particularly before Super Bowl LVI in February last year, when he mentioned a desire to look for interests beyond football and prioritize family.
“While I love football and am fully immersed in it now, I also envision a future where I can spend quality time with my family,” McVay had said at the time.

Following the Rams’ Super Bowl victory, questions swirled about his return for the 2022 season, to which McVay responded with uncertainty. However, within weeks, he clarified that he was committed to coaching the Rams and would not pursue television opportunities.
McVay, who became the youngest head coach in modern NFL history when hired by the Rams just before turning 31 in 2017, boasts a record of 67 wins and 41 losses across six seasons, playoffs included. Under his leadership, the Rams secured three NFC West titles, two NFC championships, and one Super Bowl victory.
Reflecting on the challenges of his role after this season, McVay described it as a “beautiful challenge,” emphasizing his commitment to maintaining his coaching standards and leadership amidst adversity.
“The key is preserving the joy and passion while managing the competitive drive and the daily grind,” McVay articulated. “It’s about ensuring that these elements don’t alter the essence of who I aim to be as a leader.”
McVay’s decision to stay reaffirms his dedication to guiding the Rams and continuing his successful tenure in Los Angeles.
