AJ Styles and Brock Lesnar’s Bizarre Survivor Series Saga

AJ Styles (Via WWE/Twitter)

AJ Styles is widely regarded as one of the greatest professional wrestlers of all time, known for his incredible matches with virtually every wrestler in the WWE, including the behemoth Brock Lesnar. Their history includes a notable match at Survivor Series 2017, a Champion vs Champion bout that was an absolute thrill ride. Despite being an electrifying contest, the match did not main event the show, and according to Road Dogg, the reason was because the higher-ups were unsure of what to expect from the two wrestling titans.

In a recent episode of his Oh…You Didn’t Know podcast, Road Dogg revealed that the company was hesitant to book AJ Styles and Brock Lesnar as the main event of Survivor Series 2017. He explained that while the match between Styles and Lesnar was a significant one, the officials were unsure of what kind of performance they would deliver. “We didn’t know what to close with [at Survivor Series 2017],” Road Dogg said. “AJ [Styles] and Brock [Lesnar] or this [men’s traditional five-on-five match] and so we chose AJ and Brock to not close. We’re gonna close with the other one because we didn’t know what AJ and Brock was gonna do… I didn’t know it was gonna be good, and this has happened more than once.”

In hindsight, Road Dogg has come to regret the decision, acknowledging that had they booked the Styles-Lesnar match as the main event, fans would have gone home happy. “Everybody would have gone home happy,” he said. “I think anyway.” The uncertainty surrounding the match was a common occurrence, according to Road Dogg, who revealed that it had happened more than once in the past. Despite the controversy surrounding the decision, the match ultimately received widespread acclaim and is still remembered fondly by fans and critics alike.

As for whether Brock Lesnar and AJ Styles will ever clash again in the future, only time will tell. Fans would undoubtedly love to see the two legends duke it out once more, and given their history of delivering high-stakes matches, it’s impossible to rule out the possibility entirely.
