The San Francisco 49ers have made a major move in the NFL offseason by agreeing to trade All-Pro wide receiver Deebo Samuel to the Washington Commanders. According to ESPN, the trade is set to take effect in 2025. The 49ers will receive a fifth-round draft pick in return, marking the first significant transaction ahead of the new season. This move follows Samuel’s formal request for a trade, which the team’s general manager, John Lynch, confirmed during the NFL Scouting Combine.
Deebo Samuel’s Rise, Struggles, and Trade Request Reshape 49ers’ Offensive Future
Deebo Samuel has been a key player for the 49ers since being drafted in the second round of the 2019 NFL Draft. Over six seasons, he became one of the team’s top offensive weapons, earning first-team All-Pro honors in 2021 with a career-best 1,405 receiving yards. His versatility as both a receiver and rusher made him a crucial part of the team’s success. After the 2021 season, he signed a three-year contract extension, solidifying his role as a cornerstone of the franchise.

Despite his previous success, Samuel’s production dipped significantly in the 2024 season. He played in only 15 games and managed just 670 receiving yards and 136 rushing yards. San Francisco, which had Super Bowl aspirations, struggled throughout the season, finishing with a disappointing 6-11 record.
Feeling the need for a change, Samuel approached both head coach Kyle Shanahan and general manager John Lynch to request a trade. After discussions, the 49ers agreed to explore trade options for the star receiver.
49ers Face Major Offensive Overhaul Amid Samuel’s Departure and Aiyuk’s Uncertain Future
Although the trade agreement has been reached, it will not become official until March 12, the start of the new NFL league year. With Samuel’s departure, the 49ers will need to adjust their receiving corps, particularly if another key receiver, Brandon Aiyuk, also leaves.
Lynch confirmed that other teams have expressed interest in Aiyuk, who missed a significant portion of the 2024 season due to a torn ACL. If he is traded, San Francisco will have to rely on Jauan Jennings, Ricky Pearsall, and Jacob Cowing to fill the gap.
With Deebo Samuel gone and the uncertainty surrounding Aiyuk, the 49ers face a significant shift in their offensive lineup. While the team has younger wide receivers waiting for opportunities, the potential loss of both Samuel and Aiyuk would leave a major void.
Lynch acknowledged the team’s willingness to listen to trade inquiries, hinting at possible further changes. As the NFL off-season progresses, San Francisco will need to make strategic moves to rebuild its receiving core and maintain its competitive edge in the league.
