Browns Restructure Deshaun Watson’s Contract, Free Up Cap Space, and Weigh Future QB Options

The Cleveland Browns have once again restructured quarterback Deshaun Watson’s contract to create nearly $36 million in salary cap space, making the team cap-compliant for the new league year. Before this move, the Browns were approximately $22 million over the cap. By converting part of Watson’s salary into a signing bonus, the team has managed to free up immediate financial flexibility while keeping the quarterback’s long-term deal intact.

Watson’s Recovery and Contract Situation Won’t Hinder Browns’ Free Agency and Roster Moves

Watson, who is 29 years old, still has two years remaining on his fully guaranteed five-year, $230 million contract signed in March 2022. He is set to earn $46 million in each of the next two seasons. However, Watson is currently recovering from a right Achilles tendon tear, which he reinjured three months after the initial injury in October. He has been rehabbing at the Browns’ practice facility in Berea, Ohio, with the team’s main focus being his health and recovery.

Despite still owing Watson $92 million, Browns general manager Andrew Berry has assured that the contract will not hinder the team’s ability to pursue free agents. Cleveland is expected to sign a veteran quarterback in the offseason to provide depth at the position. Berry also stated at the NFL scouting combine that the Browns’ salary cap situation would not prevent them from making necessary roster moves if opportunities arise.

Watson’s Uncertainty Forces Browns to Consider Future Quarterback Options in NFL Draft

Due to a combination of injuries and suspensions, Watson has only played in 19 games since the Browns acquired him in a blockbuster trade with the Houston Texans. Before his season-ending injury, he recorded the lowest Total QBR in the league. Given the severity of his Achilles injury, the Browns anticipate Watson will miss a significant portion of the 2025 season. The team is also expected to receive some cap relief through an insurance policy on Watson’s contract after he missed 10 games in 2024.

With the second overall pick in this year’s NFL Draft, speculation is mounting that the Browns will target a quarterback as a long-term investment. The team is actively evaluating top prospects, including Cam Ward and Shedeur Sanders, who are visiting Cleveland for top-30 visits this week. This suggests that the Browns may be preparing for a future without Watson or at least ensuring they have a strong backup plan in place.
