Chiefs Add Gardner Minshew as Backup QB Amid Uncertainty Over Wentz’s Future

Gardner Minshew is joining a new team in the AFC West, signing a one-year deal with the Kansas City Chiefs. The move comes after multiple reports confirmed the agreement on Thursday. Minshew, 28, was released by the Las Vegas Raiders a day earlier as the new league year began.

During his time with the Raiders last season, Minshew played in 10 games, starting nine of them. He completed 66.3 percent of his passes for 2,013 yards, throwing nine touchdowns and 10 interceptions. However, he was released with a failed physical designation due to an injury.

Chiefs Bet on Minshew’s Recovery as Wentz Likely Moves on in Free Agency

Minshew suffered a broken collarbone in Week 12 against the Denver Broncos, which sidelined him for the remainder of the season. Despite this, the Chiefs are confident enough in his recovery to sign him in mid-March, adding him as a potential backup or competition for their quarterback depth chart.

Originally a sixth-round pick in 2019, Minshew has played for the Jaguars, Eagles, Colts, and Raiders, making 46 starts in 59 career appearances. He has thrown for nearly 12,000 yards with 68 touchdowns and 34 interceptions. His arrival likely signals the departure of Carson Wentz, who was Kansas City’s backup last season and is now expected to explore free agency.
