The Boston Red Sox have shown consistent interest in Alex Bregman, who remains unsigned. This offseason, they have been actively pursuing the two-time World Series champion, hoping to strengthen their lineup with his skills. Bregman’s market, however, has been unique compared to other free agents, with his long-term deal aspirations driving his decisions.
Bregman Prefers Long-Term Lucrative Deal
Unlike other free agents, Bregman is reportedly waiting for the right long-term, lucrative contract. This could be his last major contract in MLB, and he appears determined to secure a deal that aligns with his career goals. However, the Red Sox are not willing to meet these expectations, according to recent reports.
The Boston Red Sox are reportedly only looking to offer Bregman a short-term contract. The team has had multiple discussions with Bregman throughout the offseason, but they are focused on signing him for no more than four years. This shorter commitment is likely due to concerns over his declining performance and age, as he approaches 31.
Bregman’s Decline and Age Impacting Market
Bregman’s age (31 by March) and a noticeable drop in performance last season have likely impacted the Red Sox’s willingness to make a substantial offer. The team has also been preparing for the rise of highly-rated prospect Kristian Campbell, a versatile player who can fill the second or third base positions, possibly replacing Bregman in the future.
While the Red Sox are hesitant, other teams are willing to offer Bregman longer contracts. The Houston Astros have re-extended their six-year, $156 million offer, which Bregman initially rejected. Additionally, at least three other teams have reportedly offered him contracts of five years or longer, making it uncertain whether Boston will be able to land him.
