Commanders Acquire Pro Bowl Tackle Laremy Tunsil in Major Trade With Texans

The Washington Commanders have made a significant move to strengthen their offensive line by acquiring five-time Pro Bowl tackle Laremy Tunsil from the Houston Texans. According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, Washington sent four draft picks to Houston in exchange for Tunsil, including a third- and seventh-round pick in 2025 and a second- and fourth-round pick in 2026.

Additionally, the Commanders will receive a fourth-round pick from Houston in the upcoming NFL Draft. This marks another bold step by Washington to reinforce its roster ahead of the new season.

Second Major Trade of the Offseason

This trade follows another high-profile acquisition by Washington earlier in the offseason. On March 1, the Commanders secured star wide receiver Deebo Samuel Sr. from the San Francisco 49ers in exchange for a fifth-round pick.

However, the team had been prioritizing the search for a reliable left tackle, having monitored Ronnie Stanley before he opted to re-sign with the Baltimore Ravens. Despite a solid performance from Brandon Coleman last season, Washington saw Tunsil as a clear upgrade who could bring experience and stability to the offensive line.

With Tunsil’s arrival, Washington now has flexibility in its offensive line. Brandon Coleman, who started 15 games at left tackle last season, can now move to right tackle or shift inside to guard, giving the team more options to enhance its protection schemes.

Tunsil’s presence will provide quarterback Jayden Daniels with better pass protection while also helping to improve the team’s run-blocking efficiency. Strengthening the offensive line has been a key goal for the Commanders, and Tunsil’s proven talent makes him a vital addition.

Tunsil’s Contract, Trade History, and Impact on Washington’s Offensive Future

Tunsil is currently in the middle of a three-year contract extension worth up to $75 million, signed two years ago. He still has two years left on his deal, with a cap hit of $21.35 million per season. The trade to Washington marks the second time in Tunsil’s career that he has been dealt. Originally drafted 13th overall by the Miami Dolphins in 2016, he was traded to the Texans in a blockbuster deal that sent multiple first-round picks to Miami. Now, he moves to Washington as the team’s most accomplished offensive lineman.

Tunsil has established himself as one of the NFL’s top pass protectors. Last season, he ranked 10th among offensive tackles in pass block win rate, according to TruMedia.

His consistency and ability to neutralize elite pass rushers make him a valuable asset for the Commanders. With Washington focused on improving its offensive line and supporting its young quarterback, Tunsil’s arrival signals the team’s commitment to building a more competitive roster. His addition could be a game-changer for Washington’s offensive unit in the upcoming season.
