Creative Decisions at WWE: Dropping Drew McIntyre’s Accent

WWE has made many creative decisions throughout its history, and one such decision was to strip certain characters of aspects before letting them debut on the main roster. One such character was Drew McIntyre, who was asked to drop his trademark Scottish accent. As revealed by ex-WWE writer Freddie Prinze Jr on his podcast, Wrestling With Freddie, WWE wanted McIntyre to lose his accent when he first made his way up from FCW, the company’s developmental territory at the time.

Prinze Jr recalled the conversation between WWE officials and McIntyre, stating that they called him up from FCW and told him to “lose the accent.” He was taken aback by this request, arguing that McIntyre was a “big ass dude from Scotland” and that it would be unfair to ask him to change his natural speech pattern. Prinze Jr also pointed out that McIntyre was not a trained actor and had never worked on his voice, making it unrealistic to ask him to drop his accent.

As expected, McIntyre didn’t comply with the request, and his Scottish accent has become an integral part of his character. The Scottish Warrior is known for his distinct accent, as well as his promos and antics with his signature sword, Angela. It’s hard to imagine McIntyre without his accent, and fans have grown accustomed to his unique voice.

The question still remains, however, as to why WWE felt the need to ask McIntyre to drop his accent. Was it an attempt to make him more relatable or palatable to a wider audience? Or was it simply a creative decision to differentiate him from other Scottish wrestlers? Whatever the reason, McIntyre stuck to his guns and retained his accent, and it’s hard to argue with the success he’s achieved since then.

As for what the future holds for McIntyre, it remains uncertain. His contract situation is still up in the air, and fans are eagerly awaiting news on his next move. Regardless of what’s to come, it’s clear that McIntyre’s accent will remain a staple of his character. What do you think about WWE’s request for McIntyre to drop his accent? Was it a terrible idea or a misguided creative decision? Share your thoughts in the comments.
