Donald Trump has spoken at his first outdoor rally since last month’s attempted assassination, behind bulletproof glass, blaming President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris for the deadly Afghanistan withdrawal and wars in Ukraine and the Middle East. At the event in North Carolina, he repeatedly referenced the Democratic National Convention in Chicago, where speakers have condemned him as a threat to the country if he returns to the White House. Trump emphasized his desire to get personal with his opponents, asking the crowd if he should stick to policy or not.
The former president’s remarks came after Barack and Michelle Obama spoke at the Democratic convention, taking shots at Trump and his policies. Trump responded by claiming that he tries to be nice to people, but it’s tough when they get personal. He then asked the crowd if he should follow the advice of his advisors and focus on policy, or if he should get personal.
Throughout his speech, Trump made several attacks on Harris, labeling her as “the most radical left person ever to run for high political office in our country.” He also made references to the Biden administration’s withdrawal from Afghanistan, and pledged to get “critical race theory and transgender insanity the hell out of our US armed forces.” Trump also promised major investment in the armed forces and vowed to launch the largest peacetime recruitment drive in the nation’s history.
Trump was joined on stage by his running mate JD Vance, who criticized Harris and her running mate, Minnesota governor Tim Walz, accusing Walz of mischaracterizing his service record as an Army National Guard member. Trump’s rally was part of a week-long series of counter-programming to the Democratic National Convention, aimed at energizing his base and highlighting the differences between his campaign and that of his opponents.
