Ducks Acquire Ville Husso from Red Wings to Bolster Goaltending Depth

Ville Husso was traded from the Detroit Red Wings to the Anaheim Ducks on Monday in exchange for future considerations. The 30-year-old goaltender has had a challenging season in the NHL, recording a 1-5-2 record with a 3.69 goals-against average (GAA) and a .866 save percentage in nine games, eight of which were starts.

However, Husso has performed better in the American Hockey League (AHL), with an 8-4-0 record, a 2.70 GAA, .912 save percentage, and two shutouts in 13 games with the Grand Rapids Griffins.

Following the trade, Husso will report to the Ducks’ AHL affiliate, the San Diego Gulls. He is set to join the team for further development and depth in goaltending. Husso will become an unrestricted free agent after the season, which adds an element of flexibility to the Ducks’ future plans. He was drafted by the St. Louis Blues in the fourth round of the 2014 NHL Draft and has previously played for both the Blues and the Red Wings in his NHL career.

Husso’s NHL Experience Adds Depth to Ducks’ Goaltending Amid Tight Playoff Race

Husso has accumulated a 70-45-18 record, a 3.05 GAA, .901 save percentage, and seven shutouts in 141 regular-season NHL games. He has also made seven appearances in the Stanley Cup Playoffs, posting a 2-5 record with a 3.67 GAA, .890 save percentage, and one shutout. Despite his difficult 2024 season in the NHL, Husso brings significant experience, particularly in the AHL, and could provide depth to Anaheim’s goaltending pool.

The Anaheim Ducks, currently with a 25-24-7 record, are in a tight race for the second wild card spot in the Western Conference, just six points behind the Vancouver Canucks. The team’s goaltending duties have been split between veteran John Gibson and younger Lukas Dostal. Gibson, 31, has a 9-9-2 record with a 2.66 GAA and .916 save percentage in 24 games, while Dostal, 24, has posted a 16-13-5 record with a 2.92 GAA and .910 save percentage in 34 games. Husso’s addition adds depth and potential competition in the crease as the Ducks continue their playoff push.
