The recent attacks in Gaza and Lebanon have left a trail of destruction and death in their wake. In Gaza, an Israeli strike on a school sheltering displaced people has killed at least 27 people, including a child and seven women. The school was being used as a meeting point for a humanitarian organization’s children’s health team. The Israeli military claimed the strike was a targeted attack on a militant command center, but witnesses disputed this, stating that there were no police or militants present during the meeting.

This tragedy is part of a long series of attacks on civilian targets in the Gaza Strip, where over 42,000 Palestinians have been killed in the past year, according to local health authorities. The war has also displaced around 90% of the population, often multiple times, and destroyed large areas of the territory. The humanitarian organization, Terre des Hommes, has been working in Gaza, providing aid and support to vulnerable populations. The strike on the school is a stark reminder of the devastating impact of the conflict on innocent civilians.

In addition to the attack on the school, at least 18 people were killed and 92 wounded in Israeli air strikes that hit two different areas in central Beirut on Thursday evening. The strikes appear to have targeted residential buildings, with one building collapsing and engulfing in flames. The Lebanese health ministry reported that Israel launched air strikes at two locations in central Beirut, a rare attack in the capital.

The Israeli military has accused Hezbollah of establishing militant infrastructure along the border with Lebanon, and has been carrying out airstrikes in the area. Hezbollah has responded with rocket fire into northern Israel, causing few casualties but disrupting daily life. The UN peacekeeping force in southern Lebanon has condemned the Israeli strikes on its headquarters as an “inadmissible act” and “flagrant violation of international law”.

The conflict has escalated dramatically in recent weeks, with waves of heavy strikes across Lebanon and a ground invasion by Israeli forces. The UN peacekeeping chief, Jean-Pierre Lacroix, has warned that the situation is deteriorating rapidly and called for an immediate ceasefire. The international community has condemned the violence, with the European Union’s top diplomat, Josep Borrell, calling the strikes on Unifil as “an inadmissible act, for which there is no justification”.

As the situation continues to escalate, innocent lives are being lost and destroyed, and the prospect of a lasting peace seems farther away than ever. The humanitarian crisis in both Gaza and Lebanon is dire, with millions of people affected and no end in sight. The international community must take immediate action to bring an end to the violence and provide aid and support to those affected.
