Some Jewish students have joined vocal pro-Palestinian protests that have been prominent at U.S. colleges lately, but few have organized rallies in support of Israel or to address what they see as antisemitism.
However, this may be changing.
Like many Americans, Jewish students hold diverse and nuanced views on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Their hesitation to participate in demonstrations wasn’t due to lack of concern about the Gaza conflict or the controversy it sparked on their campuses.
They have debated passionately among themselves about whether and how to respond as pro-Palestinian camps spread across universities.
Some students joined these camps, observing Passover among the tents with other protesters. Many felt uneasy about what they perceived as anti-Israel rhetoric and were hesitant to organize rallies.
Now, groups supporting Jewish students are planning numerous rallies in the days ahead. Demonstrators waved Israeli flags at Indiana University Bloomington and near George Washington University on Thursday, with more flags seen outside MIT on Friday.
Their objectives include showing solidarity with Jewish students and demonstrating that it’s possible to empathize with both Palestinians and Israelis affected by the conflict.
At George Washington University in Washington, D.C., approximately 150 people, including many Jewish students, gathered on Thursday in a grassy area. According to organizer Gabrielle Guigui, the aim was “to demonstrate Jewish pride and unity … and to bring Jewish students together, as many are feeling fearful.”
