Versatile safety Julian Blackmon has re-signed with the Colts on a one-year contract. Blackmon had been seeking a multiyear deal but found himself in a challenging market due to the recent cuts of veteran safeties around the NFL.
Unlike many of the team’s in-house free agents who re-signed early, Blackmon decided to look into the market for a better offer.
After visiting with the Buffalo Bills and San Francisco 49ers, Blackmon ultimately returned to Indianapolis.
The Colts were looking to strengthen their young secondary, which struggled following Blackmon’s season-ending injury late last season.
The re-signing of Blackmon continues a trend for the Colts this spring. The team has already re-signed or extended receiver Michael Pittman Jr., linebacker Zaire Franklin, cornerback Kenny Moore II, nose tackle Grover Stewart, punter Rigoberto Sanchez, and defensive lineman Tyquan Lewis.
Blackmon enjoyed a career season in 2023, which was cut short by a shoulder injury in December.
The former free safety excelled as a full-time strong safety with the Colts, playing 15 games and achieving career highs with 4 interceptions, 8 passes defended, and 88 tackles.
His injury was a significant setback for the Colts, contributing to blown coverages in a Week 18 loss to the Houston Texans that cost them a playoff spot.
Blackmon provided key leadership for the Colts’ young secondary. Despite his experience, he’s still young, as he won’t turn 26 until August 24.
His ability to match up with a variety of players, including tight ends, and his commitment to run support were vital for the Colts in 2023.
Drafted by Indianapolis in the third round in 2020, Blackmon has recorded 214 tackles, 7 interceptions (one returned for a touchdown), 2 forced fumbles, 3 recoveries, and a sack over his four seasons with the Colts.
