A man who was being held in custody over the discovery of dismembered bodies in Kenya’s capital, Nairobi, has escaped from police detention. Collins Jumaisi Khalusha, aged 33, was detained at a police station after a court granted detectives additional time to investigate his alleged crimes before charging him. Khalusha’s lawyers have claimed that he was tortured and forced to confess to the crimes, which he denies. According to police, Khalusha confessed to killing 42 women, including his wife, after 10 bodies and several body parts were found wrapped in plastic sacks in the Kware area of Nairobi in July. The discovery of the bodies led to a widespread manhunt for the suspect, and Khalusha was eventually arrested and taken into custody.
However, on Tuesday morning, Khalusha and 12 other inmates managed to escape from the police station by cutting through wire mesh in their cells and scaling the perimeter wall. The head of the Directorate of Criminal Investigations, Mohamed Amin, described the escape as “unfortunate” and announced that the incident is currently under investigation. Acting police inspector general Gilbert Masengeli revealed that disciplinary measures have been taken against eight officers, including the area and station commanders and those who were on duty at the time of the escape. Masengeli suggested that the escape was aided by insiders, as the officers had deployed accordingly to guard the station.
Khalusha’s escape has raised concerns about the security and effectiveness of the police investigation into his alleged crimes. The fact that he was able to escape from custody suggests that there may be weaknesses in the security measures in place at the police station. The police have promised to take action to prevent similar incidents in the future, but for now, Khalusha remains at large and the investigation into his alleged crimes has been set back.
In related news, two other suspects who were arrested after being found with mobile phones belonging to some of the dead women will return to court on August 26. It is not clear whether these suspects are connected to Khalusha or if they are being held in connection with the same crimes. The investigation into Khalusha’s crimes is ongoing, and the police are still searching for the fugitive suspect. In the meantime, the people of Nairobi are left to wonder how a suspected serial killer was able to escape from custody and what further measures can be taken to ensure that such an incident does not happen again.
