The funeral of seven-year-old Elsie Dot Stancombe, a victim of the Southport knife attack, was a vibrant celebration of her life, filled with balloons, bubbles, and one of her favorite Taylor Swift songs. The service, dubbed Elsie’s Special Day, was the last funeral to be held for the victims of the attack that occurred at a Taylor Swift-themed dance class on July 29. Elsie’s coffin was carried up a pink carpet by members of her cheerleading squad, Vortex Cheer, and was adorned with pastel-colored flowers and pink ribbons. The church was packed to capacity, with attendees dressed in bright colors and florals, as per Elsie’s family’s request to avoid wearing black attire.
The congregation was asked to remain seated as Taylor Swift’s iconic song “Love Story” was performed at the end of the service. The cortege passed through Southport town center, where hundreds gathered and applauded, leaving behind floral tributes. Reverend Jennie Hardy described Elsie as a “little girl who loved a big party,” and the service was filled with heartfelt tributes from those who knew her. Katie Sykes, a teacher from Farnborough Road School, shared that Elsie “made everybody smile just by being her.” The school’s headteacher, Jennie Sephton, read the poem “We Only Wanted You,” and Reverend Canon Anne Taylor read “I Am Not Really Gone.”
Deputy chief constable of Merseyside Police Chris Green spoke on behalf of the emergency services, stating that the community’s resolve and spirit had provided comfort and reassurance during this difficult time. The community’s resilience was palpable, as hundreds of people gathered outside The Atkinson art gallery on Lord Street to pay their respects, where a vigil was held the day after the attack. The square outside the gallery became a shrine, adorned with pink balloons, candles, teddy bears, and photos of the girls who lost their lives.
In a statement, Elsie’s family described her as an amazing little girl who had the ability to light up any room she entered, and who had spent her life enjoying life with determination, persistence, love, and kindness. Axel Rudakubana, 18, has been charged with the murders of Elsie, Alice, and Bebe, as well as the attempted murder of several others and possession of a kitchen knife. Despite the tragic circumstances surrounding her death, Elsie’s funeral was a celebration of her life, and a poignant reminder of the impact she had on those around her. The outpouring of love and support for the Stancombe family and the community was a testament to Elsie’s enduring spirit, which will continue to inspire those who knew her.
