One of Chicago’s most popular attractions, nicknamed “The Bean,” reopened to the public on Sunday after nearly a year of renovations and construction.
The construction work began in August of last year, and during that time, fencing around the famous sculpture restricted close-up access for visitors.
The renovations on the plaza surrounding the sculpture included installing new stairs, accessible ramps, and a waterproofing system, according to the Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events.
The sculpture, officially named “Cloud Gate” and created by artist Anish Kapoor, weighs 110 tons (99.8 metric tons).
Located near Michigan Avenue, it is a bustling spot for tourists, especially for taking selfies due to its reflective surface resembling liquid mercury. The sculpture in Millennium Park reflects views of skyscrapers and bustling crowds.
“Visitors can now fully enjoy Chicago’s iconic Cloud Gate by Anish Kapoor once again,” city officials stated on Sunday. “Come back and capture your #selfie!”
