U.S. officials and representatives from China clashed over artificial intelligence during talks in Geneva, with each side expressing their views on AI’s risks and management. The discussions, described as candid and constructive, highlighted the tensions between Beijing and Washington on this rapidly advancing technology.
According to statements from both governments on Wednesday, the U.S. National Security Council noted that discussions covered AI safety and risk management.
They emphasized the importance of ensuring AI systems are safe and trustworthy while building global consensus on these principles.
The U.S. also raised concerns about the potential misuse of AI without specifying details.
Meanwhile, China’s Foreign Ministry’s Department of North American and Oceanian Affairs criticized U.S. restrictions and pressure on AI, expressing a firm stance against these actions.
The talks marked the first formal U.S.-China dialogue on AI following a meeting between Presidents Biden and Xi Jinping in November, reflecting shared concerns and aspirations regarding this innovative yet potentially risky technology.
