Vice President Kamala Harris spoke on Thursday to a large group of graduating cadets from the U.S. Air Force Academy in Colorado. She reflected on America’s airpower achievements during D-Day and emphasized the importance of technological advancements like artificial intelligence for the current generation.
“Eighty years ago, America gained control of the skies over Normandy, and we have maintained that control ever since,” Harris told the 974 graduates. This class began their journey amidst pandemic challenges such as lockdowns, masks, COVID-19 testing, and virtual learning.
“Our nation is relying on you to uphold and defend that strength, including through your innovation capabilities,” Harris added.
Harris commended the roles played by the Air Force and Space Force globally, from patrolling NATO’s eastern flank to countering China in the Indo-Pacific, supporting Ukraine with weapons, and defending Israel against threats from Iran.
“The security of America and the world hinges on our supremacy in the skies and space,” Harris affirmed to the assembled cadets, who are set to become second lieutenants in the Air Force or Space Force. “Your country is counting on you, and I am confident you will make us proud.”
Just days earlier, President Joe Biden addressed graduates of the U.S. Military Academy, emphasizing the unprecedented demands placed on the military across various global challenges.
Harris highlighted the graduates’ proficiency with technology, having grown up with computers and the internet. She encouraged them to continue innovating, particularly in areas like artificial intelligence, as warfare continues to evolve.
