Three deputies from the sheriff’s office were shot on Wednesday while responding to a home in northern Illinois. The suspect involved in the incident was also wounded, according to authorities.

Sheriff Brian VanVickle of Ogle County stated that the deputies had been dispatched to a residence in the Lost Lake community near Dixon following a report of threats by an individual to harm themselves or others. He mentioned that negotiators had attempted to make contact with the person by phone and decided to enter the residence shortly before noon.

“Upon entering the house, our deputies immediately came under fire from inside,” VanVickle explained.

Initially, after giving a brief statement, VanVickle attempted to leave without providing more details but responded to questions from reporters, assuring that everyone injured “is in good condition.”

A spokesperson from Katherine Shaw Bethea Hospital in Dixon reported that three individuals were brought to the hospital’s emergency department. Two of them were treated and discharged, while no information was provided on the condition of the third person.

VanVickle indicated that the Illinois State Police would lead the investigation into the shooting. As of the time of reporting, the agency had not responded to requests for comment from The Associated Press.

Aerial footage from local media later in the day depicted law enforcement and personal vehicles parked along the unpaved roads of the neighborhood. Officials were seen occasionally gathering in small groups, but there was little ongoing activity visible.
