Police are investigating a shooting at a street gathering in Akron where one person was killed and now 27 others are reported injured, with two in critical condition, according to Akron’s police chief on Wednesday.
Chief Brian Harding stated that no arrests have been made in connection with the shooting that occurred last weekend, emphasizing it is still early in the investigation to determine the motive.
Investigators have recovered shell casings from five different guns, but it is unclear whether more than one person fired shots from a vehicle into the crowd of over 100 people, Harding explained. He also mentioned that someone at the party returned fire.
During the early hours of Sunday, 45 shell casings were found along the block where the shooting took place, Harding added.
The victim of the shooting was identified as 27-year-old LaTeris Cook, a resident of Akron.
Harding noted that officers had responded to noise complaints Saturday night and attempted to disperse the gathering, which had more than 200 people, including individuals setting off fireworks.
